Albert Pizzella Obituary

Albert Gregory Pizzella, of Hingham, passed away March 17, 2013, at the age of 91. He was the husband of Celia (Marini) Pizzella for 64 years; father of Dorothy J. Pizzella of Brookline, Patricia P. Emerson of Dallas, Texas, Richard D. Pizzella of Wrentham and Stephen J. Pizzella of Nevada City, Calif.; brother of Tina Flett, Marie Cremin and the late Lena MacIssac, Francis Pizzella and Nicholas Pizzella. Also survived by seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A native of Somerville, Albert was born in 1921, to Dominic and Emma (Capozi) Pizzella. He graduated from Somerville High School in 1940 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard on the USCGC Woodbury from 1942-1945 as a non-commissioned sonar officer. In that role, Albert was instrumental in the Woodbury being credited with the "probable kill" of a German U boat off the Mississippi Passes on Aug. 8, 1942. In the summer of 1944, the Woodbury survived a hurricane off of Cape Hatteras that sunk her two sister ships, the Jackson and the Bedloe, the only U.S. Coast Guard Cutters lost on active service during World War II. Albert had a 45-year sales career with H.P. Hood, Cisco Foods, S.S. Pierce among other companies. He enjoyed food, gardening and was, along with his brothers, son, nephews and brother-in-law, an avid and gifted hunter and trainer of hunting dogs. A funeral service was held Wednesday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Interment in Liberty Plain Cemetery, Hingham. Following the interment, family and friends are invited to a reception at the Pizzella home at 4 Anderson Rd., Hingham, from noon to 3 p.m. Donations in Albert's memory may be made to the Central New Hampshire VNA & Hospice, 780 North Main St., Laconia, NH 03246.
