John E. Kelly

John E. Pope Kelly, 80, of Hingham died July 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family and cared for by the Hospice of the South Shore. He was born in Cohasset, son of the late Harold J. and Barbara (Duncan) Kelly. A proud veteran of the Korean War with the U.S. Army, Mr. Kelly had a long and distinguished career with the Hingham Fire Department for over 33 years. At the time of his retirement in 1987, he held the rank of Acting Captain. Pope was an avid golfer and held the original course record at the South Shore Country Club with a round of 63 which he attained in 1962. He was a member of Local 2398 of the Hingham Fire Department, the South Shore Country Club, the Weymouth Elks and Eagles Clubs and the Sons of Italy in Hingham. He enjoyed playing cards but his greatest endeavor and love was for his family, his children were quoted as saying, Family was always his first priority! Husband of the late Joan F. (Bagley) Kelly, he was the father of Bruce W. Kelly of Rockland, Brian A. Kelly of Hanson, Brenda L. Stevens of Canada, Jack Kelly of Hingham and the late Thomas P. Kelly. He is also survived by a brother, Henry J. Kelly of Canada; and a sister, Dorothy Garretson of Arizona. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The Kelly family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate his life Friday, July 26, 2013, from 4-8 p.m. in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St., Rockland, from 4-8 p.m. A funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Burial with military and fire department honors, will follow in High Street Cemetery in Hingham.
