Robert H. Cope Jr., of Hingham, formerly of Brewster, Marblehead and Quincy, died April 15, 2013, following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of 61 years to the late Eugenia Jeannie Cope who died in 2007. He was 89 years old. Born in Boston, he was the only son of the late Robert H. Cope Sr. and the late Florence K. (Dunn). He was raised in Quincy and was a 1941 graduate of Tabor Academy in Marion. As a young college student Mr. Cope enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, the precursor to the USAF, and served his country with honor during World War II. As an Intelligence Specialist, he saw action overseas while deployed in southern Italy with the 15 th Air Force, 304th Bombardment Wing. He earned several medals including the Bronze Star during his active duty service, and continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserves before finally being discharged with a rank of Captain. After his military service he returned to marry his sweetheart, Jeannie, in January of 1946. He also returned to Williams College and finished his degree in Political Science, graduating in 1948. Following graduation Robert accepted a position with the former Retail Credit Co., later becoming Equifax, where he worked until retiring in 1985 as an office manager. He was the loving father of Douglas W. Cope of Hingham and Donald A. Cope and wife Sheryl of Issaquah, Wash.; cherished grandfather of Robert, Heather, Jordan, Ben and Elly; and great-grandfather of Hailey; dear brother of the late Roberta Gerlach. Visiting hours were held Friday, April 19, from 4-7 p.m. at the Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Funeral Home, 26 Adams St, Quincy Center. Funeral and burial arrangements were respectfully kept private.
