Mary-Elizabeth Sheehan Obituary
Sister Mary-Elizabeth Sheehan S.N.D., 85, of the Sisters of Notre Dame, died Saturday, Jan.4, 2014 in the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester. Sister Mary-Elizabeth was born Mary Margaret Sheehan in Boston, daughter of John J. and Mary E. (Brennan) Sheehan. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1945. She graduated from Emmanuel College in 1957 and earned a masters degree from Salem State University in 1962. Sister Mary-Elizabeth was an educator in Notre Dame schools for more than 50 years. She taught elementary grades for 17 years at schools in Cambridge, Providence and Lawrence before serving as principal of schools in Worcester and Lawrence. In 1994, she moved to Hingham and joined the faculty at Notre Dame Academy She retired from teaching in 2002 but continued as an aide in the schools library for many years. Sister Mary-Elizabeth leaves several nephews and nieces in Texas, and her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame. Her sisters, Helen Mangel and Catherine Flaherty, predeceased her. Calling hours were on Tuesday, Jan.7, beginning at 12:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 1:30 p.m. in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester. The funeral Mass followed at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame, 30 Jeffreys Neck Road, Ipswich, MA 01938.
