John was a member of the Georgetown Fire Department for 37 years, having joined as a firefighter in 1972 and rising to the rank of Chief from 2004-2006. During his career with the department, he served as Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief, retiring in 2009. He was an EMT with AMR Ambulance for 34 years, serving the Newburyport area and retired in 2009. In addition to his mother, he is survived by eight brothers and sisters Patricia Durkee, David Durkee and wife Paula, Cathie Southwick and husband Craig, Peter Durkee and wife Lisa all of Georgetown, Michael Durkee and wife Pam of Rowley, Robert Durkee and his wife Janice Moore of Gloucester, Cheryl Muise and husband Cliff of Salem, NH and Mark Durkee and wife Cheryl of E. Kingston, NH. John loved his 13 nieces and nephews; Caryn Gilchrist, Tammy Courville, Ryan Durkee, Candace and Caitlyn Durkee, Becky, Robert and Stephen Southwick, Cameron, Cayla and Connor Durkee, Melissa Keefe and Megan Dunn, and several great nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Calling hours are Tuesday, July 10, 4 to 8 pm at the Conte Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Georgetown. A funeral service will be held July 11 at 10 am at St. Marys Church, 94 Andover Street, Georgetown. Interment will immediately follow at Cowles-Highland Cemetery, Town Farm Rd., Ipswich In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the John J.
