As an addenda to my message of a few years ago, recently I encountered a ballet student from the long ago time when I had the privilege of Hazel's presence in my nearly daily life. My former student's first and dearest memory of those years was of the effortless beauty of Hazel's playing. I agreed entirely. A Chopin waltz came up on my radio today, and missed her as much as ever.

This is a message for Diane and her family. I had been thinking about you and your mom and what a talented pianist she was and how I enjoyed dancing to her music. Soooo sorry to find out that she has passed. My Mom passed in dec 2016 and Dad 6 months later .
I'm sure you miss your parents as much as I miss mine. Love to you and your family

To the family of Hazel Trask,

Hazel was a major force in my life throughout my teens, twenties, and long thereafter. She was as kind, generous, and purely-intentioned a person as I have ever known. I am so sad to have lost contact with her these last years.
Though I was never her student in a formal sense, she taught me more about music by allowing me to stand behind her as she played for my ballet school than most people learn in years of classes. Never daunted by the insane things I asked of her, she once sight-read multiple pages of the six concurrent lines of a Tchaikovsky opera quartet, fusing them into something through which those delicate fingers could fly, before saying,"I'm not sure we can really do this." As I have moved through various facets of the arts, her grace, her equanimity, her humor have remained with me in a constant and inspiring manner. Generations of my company's ballet protégées know stories of her uncanny quiet facility and her loving spirit; so in a sense she has a legacy with them as she does with hundreds of other young people she influenced. Nonetheless, the world is a dimmer place without her.
