Kathryn Laura Mead, 88, died peacefully on January 28, 2013. An accomplished pianist and gifted athlete, Kitty grew up in Marblehead, attended Pine Manor College and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1948, she married Louis W. Mead of St. Louis, the eleventh suitor to ask for her hand. Loved for their warmth and hospitality, Kitty and Lou lived fifty-two lively, memorable years in Lexington, MA and Drakes Island, ME, raising four children-Betsy Tabor of Portsmouth, NH; Bill Mead of Beverly, MA; Susan Mead of Merrimack, NH; and Woody Mead of North Berwick, ME-and a great many dogs. In the years since Lou's passing, Kitty, ever witty and bright, lived with vitality well into her eighties, with graceful tennis strokes, a masterful golf game and symphony matinees. Kitty had an eye for beauty. She created gracious living spaces, lovely gardens and watercolor landscapes. She made an artistic statement out of every meal, whether tea with homemade cookies or a lobster dinner at the big round table at Drakes Island. The family delights in seeing Kitty's many gifts in her grandchildren-Laura and Max Tabor, Katie Mead and Caroline and Eliza Mead. A celebration of Kitty's life will be held February 9 at 10 a.m. at South Church in Portsmouth, NH. Gifts in her memory can be made to the Boston Symphony Orchestra www.bso.org or the Rachel Carson Preserve www.rachelcarsoncouncil.org.
