Marie Kirkland Obituary
Kirkland, Marie L., 71, of Dudley, MA died peacefully on Sunday morning February 3, 2013 at the U-Mass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. The family was so fortunate to have time to be with Marie on her last days, and to tell her how much she was loved. Marie, in turn comforted everyone there including her husband, children and grandchildren. As the Irish say, "it was a good death." Marie's life began in March 1941 when she was born in Lexington, MA. Her parents were Charles Spidle and Anna (Curran) Spidle. Marie was one of five children. They include Lois Scannell of Bow, NH, Charles Spidle of Bedford, MA, Lawrence Spidle of Easton, MA and Robert Spidle of Harwich, MA. The Spidle family was (and is) very close, and had many wonderful times in their home on Shirley Street in Lexington, MA. In September 1962, Marie married her wonderful husband, Robert Kirkland. They had four children together between 1963 and 1970. They include Keith Kirkland of Dudley, MA, Todd Kirkland of Palmer, MA, Lauren Kirkland of Oxford, MA and Tanya Kirkland of Sturbridge, MA. The family lived on Brooksbie Road in Bedford, MA for many years before Bob and Marie moved to central Mass in 2003 to be closer to their family. Bob and Marie recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together. Marie was a homemaker while the children were young, and later in life she had the opportunity to work at the daycare center at MIT Lincoln Labs. She also had her own daycare business in Bedford with her husband. Nothing made Marie happier than being with children. She was blessed with nine grandchildren who she adored, and their names are Justin, Rob, Dylan, Kelly, Tom, Kayla, Matthew, Kieran, and Riley. Happy moments for Marie included her trips to Bermuda and Alaska with her husband Bob; summer vacations at North Truro with her family; birthday parties and graduations and lastly time with her dogs. Marie also loved to cook, sew, and tend her plants. She loved life. Marie's family thanks all the dedicated health care providers who have helped her over the past 3 years. Your care and compassion is appreciated by all of us. Marie's funeral will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd. Lexington at 12pm. Burial will follow at the Westview Cemetery in Lexington, MA. Visiting hours are Wednesday February 6 from 4pm to 7pm. For those who wish, the family suggests memorial donations be made to The Home For Little Wanderers, 271 Huntington Ave. Boston, MA 02115.
