Frederick Mazer Obituary

Frederick Louis Mazer of Lexington, Massachusetts died April 1, 2013 at the age of 74. Services were held on April 3rd at Temple Isaiah followed by a graveside ceremony at the Westview Cemetery in Lexington. After graduating from Classical High School in Springfield, MA, Fred attended Yale College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and Harvard Medical School. After completing an internship in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Cardiology, he entered the US Army in 1968 and was stationed at a hospital in Berlin for the next three years. At the end of his service, he returned to his New England roots with his young family and in 1972 settled in Lexington where he joined Lexington Medical Associates and practiced medicine for the next 26 years, happily touching the lives of countless patients in the Lexington area. Fred had been an All-State Swimmer in high school and represented Yale's Varsity Swim team at the NCAA Championships during his college years. He remained an active and avid outdoorsman throughout his life, enjoying hiking, jogging, biking and sailing One of his proudest personal achievements was obtaining his private pilot's license in the early 1980s (an effort initially intended to overcome his long-standing fear of flying). After learning to fly, he spent much of his free time in the air, either alone or with friends and family, flying all over New England. In November of 1997 Fred's life was forever changed when he suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm that nearly ended his life. The lingering effects of this brain injury forced him into an early and unwelcome retirement and made it impossible to do many of the things he had come to love, including practicing medicine and flying However, over the next 15 years, Fred was able to experience with joy the arrival of his three grandchildren and to become an important and lasting part of their childhood memories. Fred is survived by his wife, Beth, and his children Jamie and Peter, his daughters in-law, Christiane and Marlene, grandchildren Sasha, Finn and Jade and his three siblings, Michael, John and Linda Goldman His family and friends will miss him dearly, as will the many colleagues and patients whose lives intersected with his over the years. He will always be remembered for his ceaseless dedication to the practice of medicine, wonderful bedside manner, heartfelt generosity, honesty, as well as his keen wit and ready sense of humor.

I remember Dr Mazer, my GP from the 70s to the 90s,
to be a skillful and caring physician, treating not only
my physical issues, but emotional as well. As a
newly single guy, he urged me to "get out there"
and find company. He never pushed me along
to keep an appointment schedule. He visited
my hospital bed in 1984, pre thyroidectomy,
asking " what are you writing, no need for"last
word letters" (I was!.) I loved that guy!
