Nathan Sokal Obituary

Nathan (Nat) Sokal, 87, of Newton, formerly of Lexington, died at home on May 8, 2016. Nat is survived by his wife of 63 years, Zelda Sokal; his children Alan Sokal (Marina Papa-Sokal) of London, England, Karen Sokal of Piedmont, CA and Diane Sokal (Randolph Meiklejohn) of Brookline, MA; and sixgrandchildren. Nat was born in Brooklyn and graduated from MIT in 1950 with BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering. He worked as an electronics engineer including service with the US Air Force at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and at his consulting firm, Design Automation, Inc. Nat is best known for inventing the Class E high efficiency power amplifier in the early 1970s, which contributed to the development of cell phones and microwave ovens. Nat was honored by the IEEE for his pioneering work, and in 2011 he received an honorary Doctorate degree from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, culminating his six-decade career in engineering. Nat enjoyed nature and outdoor activities, ballroom dancing with his wife Zelda, and their travels around the world. A celebration of Nats life will be held in August. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Nats honor can be made to any deserving organization.

Rest in peace my dear teacher,

(Several times he posted me his papaers about 26 years ago and replied my endless technical questions during my PhD work (no e-mail with real mail), I always remember him,

Zelda and family
I am so sorry to hear of Nat's passing. Even though we had worked together but briefly over 25 years ago, I was honored that he continued to keep in touch over the years. He was one of the last of that breed of innovators that made our industry what it is, and will be missed.

I am really sorry to hear about his passing. Sorry also that I didn't have the chance to see him again after so many years.
He was one of my early professional contacts after my arriving in this new country. He was gracious and encouraging toward the green horn that I was at the time. I met him many times at various conferences and in his home in Lexington. A real loss for our engineering community.

Dear Zelda,
I was very sorry to hear of Nat's passing. He had a brilliant career, and was so devoted to you and the family. I always admired what seemed to be a perfect marriage -- which 63 years can attest to! I hope you are doing well, Zelda. My sympathy to you and your family for your loss.
Best,
Nancy
