Harold P. Sorensen

Harold Peter Sorensen, 92, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, passed away on Sunday, January 13th, 2013 at the North Shore Medical Center following a brief Illness. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was the only child of Anna and Soren Sorensen. Harold earned his bachelor's degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology and his Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Harvard University. Throughout his life he was employed as an aeronautical and mechanical engineer for Pratt and Whitney Corporation in Hartford, Connecticut, the Honeywell Corporation in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and General Electric in Lynn, Massachusetts. Mr. Sorensen held many patents for his inventive work on jet aircraft engines, propulsion systems and turbines. He worked well into his eighties as a freelance engineer with Northern Research Corporation and Essex Turbine, pioneering concepts for refrigeration systems for Japanese high speed trains as well as industrial food processors for the Heinz Corporation. Harold was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Elaine Barbara (Hoff) Sorensen, whom he met during his early engineering days at Pratt and Whitney. Harold was an avid model train enthusiast, a skilled sailor and accomplished pilot. He was a kind and tender individual who loved children, the Sunday funnies, and keeping a keen eye on the stock market. Although he and his late wife had no children of their own, his loss will be deeply felt by the family members, close friends, and neighbors whose lives he touched.
