Peter G. Briggs

Peter G. Briggs, 77, devoted husband of Maura L. (Resk) Briggs of Gloucester, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a brief illness. He was born in Boston, MA on April 30, 1937, son of the late Lewis and Amy (Bryant) Briggs. Peter was a graduate of Philips Academy in Andover, Class of 1955, Harvard College, Class of 1959. He did advanced degree work at Stanford University and received a Masters degree from John Hopkins University. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy aboard the USS Wasp, UDT from 1960-65. Peter was Headmaster at the Greenwich Country Day School in CT from 1976-1992 and Headmaster at the Greenhill School in Dallas, TX from 1992-2000. Peter's most satisfying moments as Headmaster were coaching middle school football and lacrosse. Upon moving from Texas to Gloucester, Peter served as a consultant to the Richard Millburn Schools in TX and FL serving a disadvantaged student population. Peter was a member of the Bass Rocks Golf Club, Board member at the Cape Ann YMCA, a Vestry member at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Rockport, President of Old Nugent Farm Association and a driver for the Outreach Program in Gloucester. Peter's favorite retirement activities were taking his grandchildren to Good Harbor Beach to body surf and then to Harbor Scoops for ice cream. He also was an ardent fan of the Harvard Crimson football team and spent those Saturdays tailgating with his former co-captain, Robert "Shag" Shaunessy. Peter helped coach the Cape Ann Youth Lacrosse team. Peter took up golf later in life and enjoyed playing at the Bass Rocks Golf Club. He also couldn't pass up a good spy novel. Peter will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Maura Briggs; his children, Amy Briggs and her husband Richard Ames, Christian Briggs and his wife Amanda and Andrew Briggs; step-children, Caroline Weld and her husband Mark, Amy Young and her husband Brian and Jessica Palden and her husband Tashi; grandchildren, Nick and Ally Ames, Ella, Brendan and Owen Briggs, Sam and Megan Young, Maura, Tinley and Rinchen Palden and Charlotte Weld; his brother, Michael Briggs and his wife Anita; step-sister, Carolyn Stopford; step-brother, Dick Rolfe and several nephews. His funeral service and burial will be held privately. A Celebration of Life will be held on a day and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 24 Broadway, Rockport, MA 01966, Massachusetts General Hospital, Development Office, 100 Cambridge Street, Suite 1310 Boston, MA 02114 (for cancer research) or to the Cape Ann YMCA, 71 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.
