David Neil Shepherd, November 4, 1942 - August 7, 2012. Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep. Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! David Neil Shepherd, 69, passed away peacefully on August, 7, 2012 at Don Orione Nursing Home in Boston, MA. He was born November 4, 1942 and lived in Swampscott, MA in his early years. David was the son of the late Joseph Neil Shepherd and Josephine Rutkauskas Shepherd. He earned his B.A. at Salem State College in Salem MA, his M.A. at Creighton University in Omaha, NE and his Ph.D. at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. Daves passion for naval history touched most areas of his life and being near the Atlantic Ocean was his favorite pastime and well as vocation. He had lived aboard his boat the HMS Temeraire II (named for one of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelsons ships) at the Boston Bay Marina since 1984. Dave enjoyed sharing his love of the sea with others. He was the Director and Co-founder of the North Shore Sailing Program in Swampscott. Dave enjoyed career success in management, political and historical consulting, he was once the proud owner of the Marblehead Compass Deli and eventually retired with Federal Express. Dave was happy to be of service to special needs children of the Friends of Metro Boston and the Friends of Lindeman appreciated the tours of Boston harbor he provided on his boat. Dr. Shepherd started as a teacher at Swampscott High School then went on to serve as a professor of History and lectured at Boston and North Shore colleges including Endicott College and Salem State University. Dr. Shepherd worked as a political and historical consultant. As a result of his research at University of Freiburg, Germany, he published Death of a Fleet: Responsibility for the Scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow. Dave is survived by his son Blake Nelson Shepherd and his wife Carol Luebben Shepherd, and their daughter Elizabeth Blake Shepherd of Staunton, VA and fondly remembered as Captain Grandpa. He is also survived by his 3 brothers: CDR Edward Paul Shepherd, his twin brother of Swampscott, as well as Glenn Joseph, wife Jeanne of Hamilton, MA and Steven Scott, wife Kathy of Swampscott, MA. Burial and memorial service will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests those wishing to remember Dave in a special way may direct memorials to a . Funeral arrangements are being handled by Parker Funeral Home of Lynn, MA. The family wishes to convey their deepest thanks to the wonderful, caring, and dedicated staff at Mass. General Hospital and Don Orione Nursing Home for their care of Dave.
