Muriel E. "Nee" (Damren) Bates, 96, of Marblehead, passed away Friday, July 30, 2010, at a local nursing home. She was the wife of the late Reginald G. Bates. Born in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late William and Marion (Eastland) Damren. Muriel was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School and Burdett College. She worked at the Marblehead Savings Bank and later in the Marblehead Tax Assessors Office for many years. She enjoyed skiing, golf, boating in Laconia, N.H., and her winters in Florida. Mrs. Bates is survived by two sons, Bradford Bates, and Douglas Bates and his wife Mary all of Marblehead; her grandchildren, Michelle Campbell and her husband Scott, Elizabeth Bowen and her husband Adam, Greg Bates all of Marblehead, and Jennifer Foley of Derry, N.H.; seven great-grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Terri Bates of Peabody. She was also the mother of the late Marblehead Fireman, Lt. Raymond Bates. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 67 Cornell Road, Marblehead, Friday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited.
