Howard S. Johnston

Howard S. Johnston, 82, of Marlborough, MA, formerly of West Barnstable, died Thursday, August 8, 2013. Born in Quincy, MA, he was the son of the late John E. and Mary (Sherwin) Johnston. He had formerly been married to the late Patricia (Cowan) Johnston. A graduate of Harvard College and member of the ROTC program, he later served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He had been co- owner of Estes and Johnston Insurance Agency in Worcester with his late cousins, Charlie and Bob Johnston for many years before retiring on Cape Cod. He loved to travel and spent many years on the water from Maine to Florida. He crewed aboard the tall ship Larinda and served with the Coast Guard Auxiliary on Cape Cod. He also found great enjoyment from nature and volunteered at numerous national parks located along the East Coast including, Everglades National Park in Florida, Cape Cod National Seashore and Boston Harbor Islands. He is survived by his sons, Joe Johnston and his wife Sally of Chelmsford, John Johnston and his wife Susie and Archie Johnston and his wife Tamara of Berlin, MA, his sister, Sally Hohne of West Boylston, and his grandchildren, Angus, Ben, Adam, Nate, Sara Sydney, Natella and Sophie. Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Slattery Funeral Home Inc., 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough, MA.
