Joel Bornstein Obituary

Joel Bornstein, 94, formally of Marlborough and Framingham, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at his home in Mobile, Alabama. Joe, the son of Ethel and Abraham Bornstein, was born September, 1916 in Hudson. A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Joe practiced as a pharmacist until World War II. Entering the army as a lieutenant in the Chemical Corps, he rose to the rank of captain. He served in the European Theatre of Operations arriving in France just after D-Day, remaining in the service through the occupation of Germany. He returned home in 1946 entering the family business with his brothers Lou and Oscar as owners and operators of the Boston Furniture Company in Hudson. He was a well respected member of the Hudson business community involved with many local organizations. An avid golfer and bridge player he most enjoyed poker nights at the Marlboro Country Club. Joe also followed his beloved Red Sox suffering in their losses and reveling in their victories. Mr. Bornstein retired in 1981 moving to Bonita Springs, Florida relocating to Mobile in 2010. Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years Sophia (Saltzberg), his daughters Susan (Irwin) Seidman, Karen (Himath) Singh, and his granddaughters Amanda (Michael) Rowen, Arielle Singh and Jill Seidman. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Oscar Bornstein and Lou Bornstein and his sister Bess Popkin. Graveside services were conducted on June 12th at the Bnai Brith Cemetery in Peabody where he is interred. A loving husband, father and grandfather his presence, humor, kindness and counsel will be missed.
