Barbara Rita McBride, 83, formerly of South Acton, Massachusetts passed away on Saturday March 9, 2013 in South Portland, Maine after a long battle with Parkinsons disease. She was born in Concord, Massachusetts on August 8, 1929 the daughter of Eden Cahill and Catherine (OConnell) Bowse. She attended Maynard schools and graduated from Maynard High School, class of 1948. After graduation, she was employed by the Raytheon Company and New England Telephone and Telegraph in Maynard and Concord. Barbara married James McBride of Ware, Massachusetts at St. Bridgets Church, Maynard on May 14, 1955. They purchased their home on Prospect Street in South Acton in 1957. She enjoyed making that house into their home for the next 47 years. She attended country auctions to furnish the home and became a lover of antiques. She was a wonderful cook who always looked forward to family gatherings in the big dining room. As a 4-H leader in the 1960s she taught cooking. She was most happy when her flowers were blooming and she could spend the day outside tending to her yard. Her animals were such a big part of her life, too. Her favorite dog, Casey, was right there by her side whether in the yard or in the back of the 1969 canary yellow Chevelle station wagon. Barbara was a licensed realtor who with her husband operated James P. McBride Insurance and Real Estate. Operating the business in a home office allowed her to be a stay at home mom to her three children. It also allowed her to take care of neighbors. In her later years, neighbors took care of her. Barbara enjoyed being near the ocean and vacationing at Ocean Point, Maine. The two weeks that she and Jim spent there each summer with family and friends were very special to her. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, George F. Bowse, her son, James E. McBride (2001), and her husband, James P. McBride (2006). She is survived by her daughter Patricia McBride (Thomas Flood) of Cape Elizabeth, Maine and her son William McBride (Janine) of Pepperell, Mass. and her two granddaughters, Elise and Emily McBride of Pepperell, Mass. Survivors also include her sister-in-law, Irene Bowse of Gardner, Mass., two nieces, three nephews, several great-nieces and great-nephews. Lee Ann (Mara) Gower of Groton, Mass., a special cousin, also survives. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers at Village Crossings Assisted Living, Cape Elizabeth, Maine and the South Portland Nursing Home for the loving care that Barbara received over these past 8 years. A funeral Mass will be at All Saints Church in Ware, Mass. Saturday March 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at New St. Williams Cemetery in Ware. Please join the family for a time of remembrance following the burial. Location will be announced at the funeral. Please, family flowers only.
