Elise was a mentor to many women young sociologists. I first met her at Michigan and then continued to see her at the national meetings. She was wise and kind and always had something worthwhile to say.

If it had been popular to say in the 60s when I was at the University of Colorado, we would have said she was "awesome."

Elise and I were together at The University of Michigan (when I was a graduate student). Elise was a feminist scholar and activist -- who inspired many us through her life and work (and the integration of life-and-work).

I had the great privilege of working with Elise on the ASA Council and the International Sociological Association's Research Committee 32 on "Women in Society." I will always remember what a wonderful leader, colleague and human being she was. In May I reread two of her gentle but powerful letters. She was a true inspiration and will remain so.

Elise was an inspiration to my generation of (then) younger feminist sociologists: she was principled, generous, fearless in standing up for her beliefs. She did pioneering work not only on women's history and peace, but also on children's rights. Elise was part of an external review committee when I was in the sociology dept. at Michigan State University. She came with a backpack and wore the same clothes two days in a row-- an inspiration to me, that professionally respected women didn't have to toe the line in comportment (she was perfectly tidy; just not into fanciness). Thank you, dear Elise, for your wonderful life!
Love, Barrie
