Marietta J. Berry Obituary
Marietta Jean Berry, (nee Davidge), 81, died July 4th, 2018 after a long struggle with COPD. Born in Howell, MI to James and Marietta Davidge, her family settled in Hopkinton, MA where she met and married her husband of 58 years, Richard P. Berry. In 1964, The Berrys made Longmeadow, MA their home. Marietta was the neighborhood social planner, purveyor of summer childhood fun, and consummate community volunteer, respected and admired for her nononsense manner, her quick, clever humor, and her colorful expressions. She was regarded as a second mother by many of her childrens friends. Above all, she was a stay-at-home mom who knew how to remain involved in her childrens lives without cramping their styles! In 1975, she returned to work and became a wellknown staff presence in the Assistant Principals office at Longmeadow High School. She is still remembered by coworkers for consistently treating students, parents, teachers and administrators with fairness and compassion. Marietta and Dick retired to West Dennis, MA on Cape Cod in 1998, often sharing their little cottage by the sea with friends and family. Their children and grandchildren will always count summers at Sea Breeze Village with Eem and Bump (as they were named by their grands) among their most treasured memories. The couple permanently relocated to Sarasota, FL in 2015, having enjoyed 16 previous winters there. Marietta was ready to rejoin Dick, her beloved Mr. Wonderful, who predeceased her by two years. With help from Tidewell Hospice in Sarasota, Marietta left this world as she had wished: in peace, at home, and surrounded by three generations of her family. Annual 4th of July fireworks will always be a reminder to us of her independence, spark and spirit! She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her surviving family. Her children, Kyle (& David) Hauser of Wilbraham, MA and James (& Lisa) Berry of Mashpee, MA; her siblings, Judith Tuschak of Sarasota, FL and James Davidge of Blackstone, MA. Eem adored her grandchildren, Leland (& Emily) Jatkevicius, Kelsey (& Michael) Carter, and twins Morgan and Alexandra Berry. She was blessed to know both of her great-granddaughters, Nora Jatkevicius and Aubrey Carter. She wanted her many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends to know that she loved them and appreciated their notes and calls. At her request, there will be no services. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army in her memory.
