Eleanor Irish Obituary

Eleanor Frances Irish, of Duxbury, and former resident of Falmouth, died at the age of 91, May 15, at the Life Care Center of South Shore in Scituate. Born in Cambridge, Eleanor was the daughter of the late George B. and Doris (Peirce) Irish, and lived in Falmouth until 1939 when she graduated from Lawrence High School. She originally attended Suffolk University in Boston and later transferred to University of Missouri where she received a bachelor's degree from its School of Journalism in 1943. When she returned to Massachusetts, she became an account executive for Daniel F. Sullivan Advertising Agency in Boston. Subsequently Eleanor held advertising manager positions at the Timothy Smith Company in Boston, and then Sheridans department store in Quincy for 17 years. She retired as a copywriter in the advertising department of Bradlees in Braintree in 1983. Eleanor was active in many professional associations. She was a member of Gamma Alpha Chi national professional advertising fraternity for women and served as the advertising chairman of the Quincy United Fund. She was a member of the Advertising Club of Greater Boston, the Retail Advertising Club, and the North River Community Club of Norwell. While living in Norwell, she was a member of the Norwell Arts Association and also the Historical Society. She had a particular fondness for wildlife and enjoyed her many cats over the years. She loved to vacation along the coast of Maine at Orrs Island and she enjoyed gourmet cooking. Being an avid reader, she conducted weekly Literary Club meetings at the Bay Path Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Duxbury. Eleanor is survived by her brother, Alfred G. Irish of Falmouth; and two nephews, David with his wife Leslie of New York City, and Bradford of Wickford, R.I. A private graveside ceremony will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Standish Humane Society P.O. Box 634, Duxbury, MA 02331, or the National Wildlife Federation, P.O. Box 1583, Merrifield, VA 22116.
