SMSGT Francis G. Scherer

SMSGT Francis G. "Jerry" Scherer of Greenland, NH passed away on August 21, 2013, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts, Jerry was the son of the late Francis R. "Reggie" Scherer and Marie R. Scherer, and was predeceased by his brother, Michael J. Scherer. A star athlete, Jerry attended schools in Westwood, MA playing baseball, basketball and football and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies following high school. He attended Boston College and then chose his love of military aircraft and joined the U.S. Air Force as a Jet Engine Mechanic, and was part of the recruitment process selecting the first U.S.A.F Thunderbirds team. In 1955 while stationed at Mitchell Field in NY, he met his beautiful wife, Carolann "Carol". Together, with their children, they traveled to Newfoundland, Virginia, Philippines, Taiwan, and eventually retiring in Portsmouth, NH. Jerry began a second career at the US Postal Service in Hampton for 22 years than worked as a Bailiff for the Rockingham County Court House until retirement. Jerry proudly served his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Jerry was a very strong and proud man who was completely devoted to his family and who will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolann (Chauvin) Scherer, his son Michael and his wife Laura, daughters Susan Henry and Kathleen Coussoule, and son Brian and his wife Sharon, as well as his grandchildren that he adored and was so proud of: Darren and Michael Scherer, Marissa and Michael Henry, Alexa and Loukas Coussoule, Cody and James Scherer, and his two great-grandchildren, Cole and Alexander Scherer. A private burial will be held at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH with a celebration of Jerry's life to be held with family and friends in his honor.
