Elliot, Margaret C.
Margaret C. Riva Elliot, age 89, formerly of Plymouth, passed away peacefully in her home, with her family at her side, on January 31, 2015. Born in Boston on January 27, 1926, she was the daughter of Carmen Lopez and Peter Edward Riva. For many years she was a maternity nurse at Jordan Hospital and was also a real estate agent. An innovator and activist in local town government from 1965-1990, she was a town meeting member and was the first woman appointed to the Finance Committee. She also served on the Public Safety Commission and had a strong commitment to the welfare of the Plymouth police and firefighters. Later, as a member of the Board of Health, she facilitated the closure of the Manomet Landfill and, in its place, the creation of the Transfer Station. After moving to Arizona, she was active with the Red Hat Society, the Golden Girls and was dedicated to desert preservation, butterfly habitats and the Superstition Mountain Museum. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Warren Elliot III and her daughter Carole Louise Vitali and infant daughter Dorothy Maude Elliot. She leaves behind her children Claire LeRoya Mohan, Laura Jeanne Boucher and her husband Don, Jill Helene Nagle and her husband Bill, Melanie Ann Griffin, Maryfrances Elliot, Arthur Warren Elliot IV and his wife Rose Marie, and Peter Elliot and his fiance Pamela VanAlstyne. She also leaves her sisters Christine Nelson and her husband Don, Elissa Lopez Raths and her husband Bob, and Andrea Hala and her husband Lou, as well as a whopping 27 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Margaret will always be remembered as a skilled seamstress, avid reader, lover of dogs and caretaker of neglected animals. She had a charitable nature and a kindness to all those in need. A private graveside me- morial service will be held at the Second Congregational Church on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 1 PM. Donations in her memory may be made to the Plymouth Animal Shelter.
