Dorothy M. (McQuilland) Hanrahan of Plymouth, formerly a resident of Lexington for 59 years, died November 16, 2012 at Newfield House in Plymouth at the age of 101. She was the devoted wife of the late John P. Hanrahan for 51 years, and sister of the late Robert A. McQuilland. Born in Malden, Dorothy was the daughter of the late William and Mary Ellen McQuilland. She graduated from Girls Latin School in 1929 and Wheaton College, class of 1933. She received a masters of education degree from Boston Teacher's College. Dorothy worked for the New England Telephone Co. as a service representative and in 1942 was sent to Washington, D.C. to help out the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. with the unprecedented war time demand for telephone service. She retired from the phone company in 1976. Dot loved to travel. As a young working woman, she traveled cross country, to Canada and even to Cuba in 1940. When her husband received two Fullbright Awards in 1951 and 1956, she packed up her young family to live for a year in Belgium and again in 1956, for a year in Holland. While in Europe, they continued their travels in France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. At age 97, Dorothy took up painting at her assisted living residence and it became her new passion. She loved spending time with her children, grand children and great-grand children, telling stories of the adventures in her long life. These stories of a well-lived life will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Barbara Hanrahan of South Bend, IN, Marnie Oberto and her husband Peter of Plymouth and Judy Morris and her husband Frank of Hanover, NM. She was the cherished Nana of Paul, Christine, David, Jennifer, BJ and Christopher and much loved Gigi to her five great-grandchildren. Internment was in Westview Cemetery, Lexington. Donations in her memory may be made to the Wheaton College Development Office, 26 East Main Street, Norton, MA 02766.
