Eleanor Ellie Van Valen Babcock, born in Hackensack, N.J., and passed away peacefully Nov. 12, 2013, in Kingston in her beloved Plymouth County. Ellies strength was as a mother, raising 5 children as a single parent. In her career life, she started as a file clerk, attending secretarial school at night. Rising to an executive secretary, she worked for various corporations, including Continental Can and United Fruit Companies. Her gift was in her volunteer work, at 16 years old, encouraged by her mother, she did volunteer work for the Salvation Army, which continued into her 80s. In her early 80s she worked as a volunteer with VNA Hospice in Plymouth. Also, she was past president of the Red Cross in Norwell. Additionally, she was active as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Philip Babcock Jr., eldest daughter, Leah Jackson Kennedy, and granddaughter, Monika Babcock Culver. She is survived by 4 children, Peter Babcock, Christine Babcock Culver, Jeffrey Babcock, and Diane Babcock. She leaves 7 grandchildren, Eugenia, Tony, Alexis, Ava, Wolf, Skyler, and Jersey. There will be no funeral services, but a memorial is planned for a future date. Donations can be made in Ellies name to the Salvation Army, or the Plymouth Auxiliary VNA/Hospice.
