Joseph Welsford Sutherland, age 90, died Nov. 13, 2013, at the Life Care Center of Plymouth. He was the beloved husband of the late Doris E. (Powers) Sutherland. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Dec. 24, 1922, a son of the late Claude and Catherine (Cox) Sutherland, he was educated in Boston and was a graduate of Boston Latin High School. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force following his high school education. He had worked for the Quincy Market Cold Storage in Boston and later for the United States Post Office as a postal worker. Mr. Sutherland moved to Plymouth in 1991 from Dorchester. He was an avid Celtics fan and enjoyed reading and walking as a few of his favorite pastimes. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Sutherland and his wife Sherry of Rockland, Mark Sutherland and his wife Lorraine of Braintree; two daughters, Joanne Zacchini and her husband Edward of Johnston, R.I., and Jane Phelps and her husband Matthew of National City, Calif. He was the brother of Earl Sutherland of Palos Verdes, Calif.; and was predeceased by 5 siblings. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held at the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth, Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Monday morning at 11 a.m. at St. Peters Church in Plymouth, followed by interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
