Joseph Sylva Obituary

Joseph Lawrence Sylva, Jr passed away November 11, 2011 in Utah after a brief illness. Born in Plymouth on July 6, 1946, son of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Colwell) Sylva, Joe was educated in the Plymouth Schools, graduating from Plymouth-Carver High School in 1964, holding the office of Senior Class President. He went on to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, graduating in 1968. Joe taught math at PCHS for a short time, before devoting full time to his love of the ocean, starting his own business, Plymouth Ocean Tours, offering tours of Plymouth Harbor. It grew into Plymouth to Provincetown Steamship Company, with bay crossing trips and whale watching cruises. Joseph is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gail F. Sylva of Saratoga Springs, Utah, and their five children, Kristin Frey of McIntosh, South Dakota, Kimberly Bulleigh of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Lisa Sylva of Logan, Utah, Jennifer Price of Orem, Utah, and Timothy Sylva, a Marine stationed at Camp Lajeune, Jacksonville, North Carolina, as well as 13 grandchildren, his Aunt Dorothy Silva, his Aunt Phyllis Silva, and several cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Warren. Joe lived in the Plymouth and Duxbury areas until moving with his family to Asheville, North Carolina in 1991, where he taught math at the Owen Middle School and AB Technical College. After his retirement in 2009, Joe and Gail traveled in their motor home until settling in Utah in 2011. Joe loved to travel and each summer would travel to see family and discover new places all over the country. Joe loved to hike and especially enjoyed hiking from the South to North rim of the Grand Canyon and back again. Also, Mt. Washington, Pikes Peak, and Mt. Timpanogos were among his favorite places to hike. He is loved and is sorely missed.

I remember Joe from Plymouth-Carver H.S. as a wonderful person, a great classmate, and great class president. He was always friendly and willing to help. I can still picture him in a class, letter sweater, chino pants, and Pat Boone bucks for footwear (very " preppy"). Just a super guy. My condolences to the family. Jean Romano Kaplan

Just learned of Joe's passing. I remember when you, Gail, and Joe lived next door to me in Plymouth (South Green St.). My condolences to you and your family. Debbie Cohen (Quincy, MA)

Gail,
The idea that Joe is no longer here is very sad. Many of us probably thought that Joey Sylva could never die (at least not before the rest of us ...). I knew him as a fellow teacher at PCHS and worked for him on the Islander and the other boats (or as Joe would say "...not a boat. It is a vessel..."). He was (and always will be) quite a colorful character and I'm pleased and grateful to have known him!
Get some rest... Gwenn (Seaver) Marchese (Albany,Oregon)

Gail,
The best summers of my life were spent with Joe, Evelyn and the crew. Sending my sympathies to you and the children

Gail, I'm very sorry to hear of Joe's passing, he was far too young. as you know I started working for him when I was 12 and did so until he sold the company when I was 19. He taught me so much about the boat business while also being a father figure at the same time. I hope you can find comfort in knowing that I now own and operate South Florida's #1 sightseeing cruise company and apply lessons learned from Joe every single day, I still tell our crew to "clean the restrooms like my mother is using it next" as Joe told me when I was 12! If there is an ocean in heaven, rest assured he and Joe Joyce are cruising on it together, telling stories, and laughing while they do.

Gail, I am sorry to hear of Joe's passing. It has been many years since I saw Joe but I think of him every time I see Bug Light in Plymouth Harbor.

gail: so sorry to hear of joe's passing. Much too young @ 66. Life just has it's way of giving us unexpected events, but leaves those behind with a wealth of memories. Will always remember the good times & challenges we encountered together. My best to you & your family. Don Correa, Plymouth, Mass.
