Lois Hamel Obituary
Lois (Mitchell) Hamel, 98 years old, died on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at her home in West Bridgewater. Lois was born and grew up in Bristol, Conn. After serving as a Wave in World War II, she settled down in Plymouth, Conn., to raise her family. For the last fourteen years of her life she made West Bridgewater her home where she received "The Boston Cane" award for being its eldest resident. A graduate of Hartford Art School, Lois enjoyed many years as a sculptor, potter, and fine artist in oils, watercolors, and pastels. In Connecticut, she was an active member of the Litchfield, Torrington, Waterbury, and Bristol Art Leagues. For the last thirteen years she enjoyed teaching pottery to her "First Church Potters". Lois was preceded in death by her husband, John Hamel of Waterbury, Conn. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia and husband Tony Fusco of Scituate; her daughter, Carol and husband Don Ashton of West Bridgewater; and son, Jeffrey Karr and wife Bernice of Douglasville, Georgia. She was "Grammy" to Tom, Charlie, Dan, Johanna, Julie, Mark, Amy, Shane, Lynn, Jeremy, Rick, Kate, Erin and Meagan. She was "Great Grammy" to Jake, Ava, Angelina, Henry, Wyatt, Riley, Rose, Reese, James, Alex, and Grace. A "Service of Thanksgiving and Witness to the Resurrection" will be held on Sunday, March 18, at 4 p.m. at the First Church of West Bridgewater, 29 Howard Street, West Bridgewater. A reception in the church fellowship hall will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Bridgewater Food Pantry or the First Church of West Bridgewater.
