Bernard L. Stead

Maj. Bernard L. Stead, USMC, Ret. 'Bernie', died July 13, 2013, at the Bedford VA Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Louise D. (Slocomb) Stead. Son of the late Hezekiah and Julia (Brown) Stead, Bernie was born on July 22, 1921, and raised in Lynn. A Brantwood Camper throughout the 1930s, he graduated from Lynn Classical HS. Bernie was the Chelsea AC 1946 Boxing Champion. A UMASS Amherst graduate and All Time Football Letter Winner in 1942, 1946 and 1947. Maj. Bernard L. Stead, USMC, Ret. served in WWII and the Korean Conflict and remained active in the Reserves. He was a long-time resident of Ernest Street in Cliftondale and an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Bernie retired from Saugus HS where, throughout his tenure, he was Head of P.E., football/ baseball coach and math and history teacher. A prolific storyteller with a great sense of humor, he was known to smoke a cigar when the Saugus football team won a game. He was a song and dance man, dearly loved and doted on all his grandchildren, enjoyed caring for Belgian Quarter Horses with Gary and cherished his friendships in the O.B.C. He was the dedicated father of Diane Hogarth of Canada; Cynthia L. Stead of NV; Beverly S. Christo and Gary B. Stead of MA. Charismatic grandfather of Joseph A. Zanelli, Jr., Joseph J. Christo, Alana R. Christo, Gregory K. Christo, Clarissa L. Stead, Aurora T. Christo and Harrison B. Nuzzo and the Great-grandfather of Christian J. Zanelli. Mr. Stead is also survived by niece Barbara Walsh, cousin Fred Stead, and sister in law Annette Slocomb. He was the brother of the late Clyde Stead.
