Mrs. Leona G. (Grothe) O'Neil in Somerville, formerly of Saugus l, 99 years, died on Tuesday, August 5th, 2014 at the Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence in Somerville. She was the wife of the late Louis F. ONeil, Sr. Born in Pine City, MN, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Konicek) Grothe. She was a WWII U.S. Army WAC veteran. Mrs. ONeil was a member of the Saugus Senior Center, Blessed Sacrament Parish and Sodality, Saugus American Legion and WAC Chapter 14. A devoted homemaker, she also worked part-time at the former Zayre store in Saugus in the mid 1980s. She had been a resident of Saugus since 1946 and spent the last four years of her life in Somerville. Mrs. ONeil leaves five children, Robert L. ONeil and his wife Mari-Ann of Medford, Richard A. ONeil and his wife Donna of Syracuse, NY, Margaret L. ONeil Lankow of Saugus and her late husband William F. Lankow, Louis F. ONeil, Jr. and his wife Marcia of Saugus, Joseph H. ONeil and his companion Sandra Jensen both of Saugus; one sister, Mary Ellen Grothe of MN. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. ONeil is predeceased by her sister Ella Grothe and two brothers, Clarence and Raymond Grothe. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 186 Highland Ave., Somerville, MA 02143.
