Rev Frederick Powers Jr Rev Powers Jr. SCITUATE -The Very Rev. Frederick Forrest Powers, Jr. 84 of Scituate, Ma. Died on July 16th surrounded by his loving family. He was a retired Episcopal priest and World War II veteran. Frederick was born in Arlington, MA. To the late Frederick and late Mildred Powers. Beloved husband for 55 years to Joan Maxwell (Barker) Powers. He is survived by his daughters Mary Jeffers and her husband Steve of Clemson, SC, Angela Gasparri of Cranston, RI, Sharon Powers of Mckinleyville, CA, Laura Cardosa and her husband Buddy of Riverside, RI; and Victoria Powers of Carmichael, CA. He is survived by 17 grandchildren and 4 step grandchildren. Brother of the late Fr. Alden Powers who leaves a wife Nancy Powers of Dorchester, MA. Brother-in-law of Jean & Nick Catsakis of Florida, Dorothy & Fleming Boye of Denmark and Kay & Charles Kingsbury of MA. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. Also his close friend, Herbert Jackson and his wife Barbara of Cotuit , MA. Frederick grew up in Squatum MA. and graduated from N. Quincy High School in 1945. Joined the US Navy and was a radar operator on a DD - 716 USS Wiltsie. He graduated from Harvard University in 1950. Went in to seminary from St. Johns Church, Hingham, MA, got a M. Divinity from Episcopal Seminary, Nashotah, WI. In 1955, a M. Ed. At Temple University, Philadelphia, PA., S.T.M. at Philadelphia, PA., M.B.A. at Temple University, and a Dr. Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary. Clinical training at Bellevue Hospital, N.Y.C., Byberry State, Philadelphia, University of PA Medical Center, Philadelphia, Program Management & Labor Relations University of CA , Davis, CA. He was the curate at Trinity Church, Newport, R.I., where he was one of the founders of the Newport Boys Club.; He met his wife Joan at The Episcopal Conference Center, Pascoag, RI. Rector of Trinity Church, Cliffside Park, N.J.; he was active in prison reform and prison in Philadelphia , PA. for ten years and was interfaith coordinator for the prisons and founder of The Fellowship of St. Dismas. He was a hospital chaplain for three years in Philadelphia. He also taught principles of management and personnel administration at St. Josephs University. Rector of St. Giles, Upper Darby, PA., Rector of St. Pauls, Sacramento, Archdeacon of the Diocese of Northern CA, Sacramento, CA. and founder and executive director of Episcopal Community Services where he started a prison ministry, Rector of The Church of The Good Shepherd and Emmanuel Church, Philadelphia, PA., He retired as Dean of All Saints Cathedral, Milwaukee; and became personal administrator at the Palmyra division of Diemakers, Inc. and part time priest in charge of St. Judes Church, Monroe City and St. Pauls , Palmyra, Missouri. After a serious head injury in Missouri in 1989 Fred and his wife moved to Scituate, MA to be near his parents. He was delighted to be back on the East Coast and looked forward to visits from his daughters and grandchildren at holidays and in the summer. Before his accident he enjoyed reading and taking courses at the different universities. He was a member at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Scituate and sometimes helped with the services. He was an associate member of The Order of the Holy Cross, NY and associate member of The Community of St. Mary, WI. He was proud of being a World War II Veteran and was a member of the American Legion Post 144 of Scituate. He was former Mason and Shriner. A celebration of Freds life and ministry and a funeral mass will be held at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Scituate on August 20, 2011 at 11 AM. A reception will follow. All family and friends are welcomed. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to St. Lukes Episcopal Church for their Outreach programs, 465 First Parish Rd., Scituate, MA or Norwell VNA and Hospice, Novell, MA |
