Jean J. Burkhardt

Obituary Condolences

Jean J. (Johnston) Burkhardt of Scituate, passed away surrounded by her family May 13, 2013, at the age of 82. She was the devoted wife of 61 years to John Jack Burkhardt. Jean was born and raised in Waterville, Maine, where she graduated from Waterville High School. After high school she headed off to Boston to attend the New England Deaconess School of Nursing. After graduating as a registered nurse she worked for approximately 10 years at Boston area hospitals. While working as a nurse she met Jack Burkhardt of Brookline whom she married in 1951. Two years later while living in Brookline they had their first of six children and soon after delivering her second son moved to Jamaica Plain where they would remain until 1961. By this time they had added two daughters and with four children they decided to leave the city for a leafy suburb. They chose Scituate where they would add the last two children and happily remain for 52 years. Jean worked periodically as a nurse at alcohol rehabilitation centers where she performed wonders and made lifelong friends. Over the past 35 years, Jean traveled repeatedly with her beloved Jack to Ireland and Italy where they were fortunate enough to have dear friends to both visit and travel with. Jean was a voluminous reader, news junkie, world class cook and Celtics fanatic. She was the loving mother of John Jaye and his wife JoAnn of Balt imore, Md., James and his wife Laurie of Canton, Jane Noonan and her husband James of Scituate, Julie Nantais of Plympton, Jean Jennings and her husband Archer of Coventry, Conn., and Joseph of Scituate; sister of Paul Johnston of Waterville, Maine, and the late Elizabeth Penney; proud grandmother of 15. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial celebration Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m. in the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, 381 Country Way, Scituate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeans memory to the New England Deaconess Scholarship and mail to Phyllis Giardini, 30 Sun Lane, Newton, MA 02459.
