Anne Folger Pinkham Vara died at Norwood Hospital on July 3, 2013, of complications from a stroke. She was 84. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of Everett C. and Sara M. Pinkham, and lived in Squantum and Foxboro before moving to Needham in 1937. A graduate of Needham High School and the Chandler School in Boston, she married Richard H. Dick Vara, also of Needham, 1951. The couple moved to Dover in 1956 and built the house where they would live until Dicks death in 2005. In 2007, she moved to an apartment at New Pond Village in Walpole, where she lived the last years of her life. She is survived by her youngest brother, David M. Pinkham of Stowe, Vermont. Also surviving are her five children: Suzanne Vara of Portland, Oregon; Jon Vara of Cabot, Vermont; Douglas Vara of Kingfield, Maine; Gregory Vara of Millis, and Stephen Vara of Blue Hill, Maine, as well as grandchildren Elizabeth, Cedric, Brittany, Rosalind, Ethan, and Jackson. After their children were grown, she and Dick traveled often and widely, including a memorable summer-long bicycle crossing of the Great Plains from Matamoros, Mexico to Winnipeg, Canada. An avid watercolorist and quilter, she also took a keen interest in current events, and was active for many years in the League of Women Voters. Until weeks before her death she read the newspaper from cover to cover seven days a week. A longtime member of The Dover Church, she also took part in school programs through the Dover Council on Aging. A memorial service was held at the Dover Church, 17 Springdale Ave. Dover on Thursday July 11th at 11:00 AM, Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
