Emily (Pearlstein) Arulpragasam, 77, a resident of Lunenburg for 28 years, died Tuesday, July 16, in hospice care in Amherst MA, after a brief hospitalization. Her husband of 35 years, Jega A. Arulpragasam, passed away last year. Her brother, George Pearlstein, and sister, Janet Erbe, are also previously deceased. Emily leaves her daughter, Elise Springer, and granddaughter, Josey S. Pestel, of Middletown, CT; her sister, Margaret Pearlstein, of Barre, VT; her brother, Richard Pearlstein, of Amherst MA; and her late husband's children and their families, including Roshan S. Hill of Sydney, Australia; Darini S. Arulpragasam, of Savoy, IL; Rajpal Arulpragasam, of Woodbridge, CT, and Rohan S. Arulpragasam ,of Southend-On-Sea, UK. She is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, in both the Pearlstein and Arulpragasam families. Emily was born April 12, 1936 in Barre, VT, to Vere E., and Helen (Wheeler) Pearlstein. After graduating from Spaulding High School in Barre (1954), Emily attended Jackson College at Tufts (BA 1959), and then Duke University (MA 1961). Emily returned to the Boston area where she worked as a French teacher at Lincoln-Sudbury schools, and later as a copy-editor for Addison-Wesley, while married to her first husband, William C. Springer. She moved to Stow, MA when she remarried in 1977, and to Lunenburg in 1985. Together with her husband, Jega, she enjoyed classical music, scrabble, bird-watching, and travel. She was also an avid amateur pianist, a research genealogist for the Pearlstein and Wheeler lineages, and a book club enthusiast. A memorial gathering will take place on Tuesday, July 30, at the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 763 Mass Ave., Lunenburg, with informal calling hours at 2pm, and a brief program of shared memories and reflections at 3pm. Rabbi David Teva will facilitate the non-denominational service. Ashes will be interred privately at a later date, at the North Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be left at the funeral home, or mailed directly to Hospice of the Fisher Home, 1165 N.
