Kathryn Smith

Kathryn (Keeler) Smith of Duxbury, formerly of Wellesley and Sudbury, died of natural causes on Sept. 15, 2013. Born in Yonkers, NY to May Decker and Wendell Prime Keeler and step-mother Elizabeth Ogden Soper, she attended the Halstead and Shipley schools and studied government and early childhood education at Smith College. With her late husband Edward Curtis Smith, she raised four children in Rochester, NY and Sudbury, MA while working part-time as a nursery school teacher. In later years in Wellesley and Duxbury, Kathryn was actively involved in her church and social justice and peace groups. Her best memories were of family and friends, especially her idyllic childhood summers spent in Dorset, VT and Essex, NY. In retirement, she travelled abroad extensively and then had many happy years in the Village of Duxbury retirement community. She is survived by her sons Curtis Reed Smith of Wellesley, his wife Anne (Briggs) and their children Ben, Ted, Peter and Lizzie, Nathaniel Mather Smith of Charlotte, NC, his wife Brenda (Browning) and their children Justin, Scott and Jason, Samuel Bradford Smith of Duxbury, his wife Bonnie (Jernigan) and their children Tim, Sally and Nick, and her daughter Ruth Sturtevant Gillan of Brookline, her husband Duncan Gillan and their children Mac and Kathryn. A service to celebrate Kathryn's life will be held on Sunday October 20th at 1:00 PM in the First Parish Church, 842 Tremont St. (Rt. 3A), Duxbury.
