Leo E. Spottswood Obituary
Leo Edward Ted Spottswood, 93, a Sudbury resident for the past 62 years, died Saturday, January 13, 2018, peacefully at home in the company of his family. He was the husband of the late Barbara E. (Butler) Spottswood, who died May 1, 2006. Born April 9, 1924, in Boston, he was a son of the late Samuel Leo and Mildred (Robart) Spottswood. He was raised in Jamaica Plain and Watertown, graduated Watertown High School, and received a bachelors degree in business management and engineering from Northeastern University in 1957. Mr. Spottswood made a life career with the Raytheon Corp., managing numerous projects at the Waltham, Wayland and Sudbury plants and crossing the country often as the companys technical representative. He retired in 1989. He served in the Navy in World War II and the Korean conflict, first with the weather service in South America and later aboard the USS Albany in the Mediterranean Sea, where he forecast weather for the Sixth Fleet until his honorable discharge in April 1952. Skilled in many crafts, Mr. Spottswood oversaw construction of his house in the Blueberry Hill neighborhood in 1955 and later designed and built a large addition to complete the home. He gave new life to electronics, musical instruments, toys, objets dart and furniture that crossed his workbench and serviced his own cars and appliances. He inspired a long-lived family motto for whenever something broke: Daddy fix! He was an avid sailor and moored his sailboat, Can No. 1, in Hingham Harbor. He spent many summers cruising the islands of Boston Harbor. After retiring, he and his wife continued a varied life of travel, roadside camping in Newfoundland, cruising the Panama Canal and crisscrossing Britain and Ireland. He was a talented photographer and produced a treasured archive of his life, family and travels. He is survived by a daughter, Diane Spottswood of Marlborough; a son, Kent Spottswood of Chepachet, RI, and his wife, Tina; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Joan E. Meenan of Sudbury, Marjorie DeMarco and Charles Gauley. Visitation will be held Friday, January 26, 2018 from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Duckett | J.S.
