Donald Earle Vail Obituary
Donald Earle Vail, 66, of Auburn, died at his home on Jan. 2, 2011, after a long and brave battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He was born on Jan. 31, 1944, in Hartford, CT, the son of Leonard Vail and Edith Vail (Parker). Don was raised in Watertown, MA and graduated from Watertown High School in 1962. He attended Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, NY, and obtained an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. Don also was a Vietnam War Veteran, having served in the US Air Force on active duty for four years. His service began in 1964. He received an honorable discharge in 1968 after achieving the rank of Sergeant. He then served four years in the reserves. Don later worked at Digital Equipment in Contoocook, NH until 1996, and then as a manufacturing coordinator at Avid Technology Corp. in Tewksbury, MA until 2001. He moved to Auburn in 1994. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Paula (Whalen) Vail of Auburn; his mother, Edith Noftle of Boxborough, MA; his children Katharine Burchell of NY, Jane Vail and Scott Goodwin of NY, Daniel and Amber Vail of MD, Kelly and Robert Sirois of Londonderry, NH, Scott Zumwalt of Auburn, NH, and Lisa Connolly of Manchester, NH; his brother Garfield Vail of MS; his sister Carolyn Vail of Boxborough, MA; his sister Frances Vail of Troy, NH; eight grandchildren; and other family members. Don loved animals (especially his beloved dog Max), country music, singing, playing the guitar, telling jokes, his truck, painting, woodworking, and tinkering around his workshop. Hell always be remembered for his generosity, compassion, sense of humor, witty one-liners, and loving and gentle spirit. Private funeral services will be held at NH State Veterans Cemetery Chapel, 110 Daniel Webster Hwy., Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Memory of Donald Vail to the Manchester Animal Shelter, 490 Dunbarton Road, Manchester, NH 03102.
