Emma Edmonds Obituary
Emma Kate Edmonds, age 94, of Woburn, MA, formerly of Arlington and Cambridge, passed away peacefully at home on May 17, 2015. Kate was born on June 30, 1920 in Reidsville, North Carolina to David Ernest and Beulah (Snipes) Trantham. She was the fifth of eleven children raised on a tobacco farm. She graduated from St. Leos Hospital School of Nursing, Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1942 where she received her RN. Kate was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Paul W. Edmonds, and her siblings Hugh and Tom Trantham, Pearl Hill and Dora Hubbard. Kate had a great love for her country and joined the Army on January 1, 1943 and became 2nd Lieutenant Trantham, Army Nurse Corps. It was during her Army service that she met 1st Lieutenant Paul W. Edmonds who was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division. They both were sent overseas. While at Warminster Hospital in England, she was reunited with Lieutenant Edmonds. They were married on March 18, 1944 in Lyme Regis, England shortly before Paul left with the 1st Division for the D-Day invasion. After the war ended Kate and Paul settled in Cambridge, MA where they raised their family. Kate continued her nursing career at the Cambridge City Hospital where she was a floor nurse and then evening supervisor until her retirement in 1980. Kate was a woman of faith, a devoted and loving wife and a wise and caring mother. To her, family was everything. She leaves a legacy of unselfish love and kindness to all. She is survived by her children Paula Edmonds Hollifield of Boise, Idaho, Stephen Edmonds and his wife Mary of Athol, David Edmonds and his wife Ann Mc-Quade of Woburn, Patricia Gullage and her husband Charles of Burlington, Mary Edmonds of Winchester and Geoffrey Edmonds and his wife Marleuza of Milford. She is also survived by her grandchildren Paige Deitzel, Kimberly Lennon and her husband Kieran, Paul Edmonds and his wife Elaine, Gracemarie Edmonds, Michael Rich, Christian Edmonds, Delia Edmonds, Erin Gullage, Elizabeth Gullage Robinson and her husband Andre, Nathaniel Edmonds and his wife Beatriz, and Jhohann Edmonds; and her great grandchildren Taylor & Treston Deitzel, Brandon & Jared Lennon, Elijah & Isaiah Gullage, Andre Robinson, Jr., Aiden Robinson, and Ashley Edmonds; and her first great-great grandchild Hannah Lennon. She is further survived by her siblings Ruth Glass, Sam Trantham and his wife Alice, Rosa Pierce, David Trantham, Alton Trantham and his wife Theresa, Sarah Gaydon and her husband Pete, and numerous nieces and ne-phews. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Charles Church in Woburn on Wednesday, May 20 at 10:00 am. Burial with Military Honors was at the Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge.
