Irene Amy Gifford of Pinehurst, Massachusetts, passed away on April 17, 2014 after a two-year-long battle with cancer. She leaves behind five loving children: James, Heather, Candace, Susan, and Jackie. Her 72nd birthday would have been on May 4, 2014. Irene was born in Dover Foxcroft, Maine, and, when she was young, moved with her brothers, Don and Jimmy, and sister, Carole Virginia, and their father, Merlin, to Billerica, where they lived with the family of Ida Rumrill, which soon became their own extended family after Merlin and Ida married. Irene married twiceto Gordon Dryden and then to Jack Gifford. She maintained life-long friendships and grew especially close to her seven grandchildren. She also lived in Billerica for the rest of her life. Irene had a nurturing spirit and dreamed of teaching children how to read. She enrolled in college at 67 years old, hoping to earn a liberal arts degreea feat she was quite proud of. Irene loved the outdoors, especially the White Mountains, the beach and Graham Lake in Maine. She also loved caring for animals, swimming, shopping, movies, baking lemon bread, and reading. Above all, she enjoyed being with her family. She was truly loved and will be missed by all. To celebrate Irenes life, a memorial will be held at the Community Congregational Church of Pinehurst, 803 Boston Road, Billerica, Massachusetts; 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2014.
