Samuel M. Hopkins, age 66, passed away on April, 6, 2013 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, NM, following a brief illness. Samuel was born on March 20, 1947 in Salem, Mass., son of Jerome and Janet (Ingalls) Hopkins. Samuel grew up in Essex where he and Sandra were married on October 23, 1985. They moved to Mariaville, Maine and then to Lakeport, Calif. where he owned and managed the Rainbow Motel. He and many occupations throughout his lifetime. He was a florist, exterminator, bartender and a small business owner. Samuel was always active in his community in Essex where he served on the Planning Board. He was active in the 4H Program in Hancock County, Maine. He and Sandra made their home in Santa Rosa, NM in 2002. Sam loved his garden and is beloved dog Crissy. He loved the outdoors, his plants and his little house on the prairie. In the last few years his most important job has been Papo to his beloved grandson Michael Bailey. He is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Sandra of Santa Rosa, NM, daughter Barbra Bailey, grandson Michael Connor Bailey also of Santa Rosa; a step-daughter Elizabeth Bailey of Lowell, Mass; stepson William Bailey of Haverhill, Mass; his brother Richard Hopkins and wife Cheryl of Topsfield, Mass; nieces and nephews, Carla Adams and husband Richard, great niece and nephew Heather and Kevin all of Essex, Mass; Tom Hopkins and wife Marci, great niece Janet all of Bedford, Mass; and Betsy Hopkins of North Andover, Mass; his sister Meredith Wallace and husband Vern of Santa Cruz, Calif., his nieces and nephews Cindy, Scott and Eric all of California. Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational Church of Essex, 29 Main Street, Essex, Mass. with Rev. Tim Ziegenhals officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Essex, 29 Main Street, Essex, MA 01929.
