Jessamine Warren Obituary

Jessamine G. Warren, a longtime resident of Walpole, died at home on September 16, 2013 at the age of 103. Born at home in Savannah, Georgia on September 15, 1910, she was the daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Beirne Gordon. She grew up in a household that included several servants, including a freed slave, and was cared for by a nanny during her childhood, a common practice at the time. To escape the Georgia heat her family spent their summers in North Hatley, Canada, where she met her future husband, Winslow Warren, in 1929. The couple married on February 15, 1932 and settled in Boston. They moved to Walpole in 1934 where Mr. Warren established an insurance agency that still bears his name today. Between 1942 and 1945 Jessamine worked in her husbands agency while he served as A Naval officer in the South Pacific as a fighter director. After the war, she did volunteer work for the Norwood Hospital, the Red Cross and served on the board of managers on Chickering House. An enthusiastic conservationist, Jessamine donated her land to the New England Forestry Foundation to ensure it would remain in its natural state and not be subject to future development. She is predeceased by her husband Winslow in 1973 and her brother Donald Hastings Gordon in 2005. She is survived by her niece, Sally Gordon Hogan and her husband Gregory of Jericho, Vermont and their sons, Trevor of Brighton, Massachusetts and Patrick of Ipswich, Massachusetts. She is also survived by her nephew Donald H. Gordon, Jr. of Portland, Maine and his two children Paul of Merrimack, Massachusetts and Jane Gordon and her husband Brian Scharnberg and their daughter Lucie of Irvine California. She is also survived by her godson F. Burgess Small and will be greatly missed by many children and grandchildren of her friends who always treasured her honest opinions, wise counsel and rare perspective that only such a long life could provide. A memorial service is being planned.
