Eugene A. Gene Hayes, 75, of Fox Run Rd., formerly of Walpole, died Sunday, March 23, at home with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Susan A. (Wesgan) Hayes; 4 children, James M. Hayes and his partner Herbert Medina of Quincy, Erin C. Buckman and her husband Michael of Walpole, Eugene A. Hayes Jr. and his wife Sheri of Hopedale, and Brian C. Hayes and his wife Kerri of Milford; 6 grandsons, Michael, Joseph, Jacob, Matthew, Ryan, and Connor; his sister, Betty Foley of Pocasset; and several nephews and nieces. He was brother of the late James Hayes; and was predeceased by a stepbrother, Edgar Lindblom, and brother-in-law, Joseph Foley. Born Aug. 15, 1938, Gene was son of the late James M. and Alice E. (Mellor) Hayes and lived 9 years in Blackstone, previously living in Walpole 30 years. Mr. Hayes was a sales manager for American Brands Co. for many years. He later worked as Executive Staff of Sales for N. Atlantic Trading Co. He retired at age 62. He was a Vietnam era veteran serving in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant in Artillery. He was a volunteer at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood and Blessed Sacrament grammar school in Walpole. He also volunteered at the Pine Street Inn in Boston. A great cook, he also loved his vegetable garden and woodworking where he made toys for his kids and grandkids. He loved to travel and enjoyed golf but was primarily a family man. He was fun loving, enjoyed stamp collecting and was extremely organized. His funeral will be held Thursday, March 27, from Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Rd., Uxbridge, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Pauls Church, 48 St. Paul St., Blackstone. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery.
