William "Bill" A. Mills, 81, of Winterhaven, Fla., and East Wareham, passed away with family members by his side Jan. 15, 2013, at Tampa General Hospital, after a brief hospitalization. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Vivian K. (Nelson) Mills; his son and daughter-in-law, Steven A. Mills and Imelda Ortiz-Mills of Fairbanks, Alaska; his daughters and sons-in-law, Karin J. and Bruce A. Baker and Sue-Anne and Richard Johnson, all of Middleboro; grandchildren, April Hansen and her husband Craig of Kingston, Derek Baker and his wife Bethann of Middleboro, Amy Baker of Middleboro, Julianne Sullivan of Fall River and Lindsay Marquardt of Alliance, Neb.; and great-grandchildren, Cole and Cali Hansen of Kingston and Alexandra Baker of Middleboro. Bill was preceded in death by his siblings, Elizabeth Bissey, James, and beloved younger twins Isabel Parry and Margaret Kenney, and Louise Williams. Uncle Billy is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A Korean War veteran, Bill served aboard the USS Wiltsie, DD-716 as a sonarman. He participated in many engagements and volunteer operations during the conflict from 1950-1953, earning seven battle stars. Bill was proud of over 30 years in government service, having worked at the Charlestown Naval Shipyard as a marine machinist, and as a contract inspector at the JFK building and Custom House in Boston. William was born in Braintree, son of the late Margaret (Allan) Mills and James Steele Mills, immigrants from Glasgow, Scotland. He was a graduate of Braintree High School and Massasoit Community College. Bill made his home in Whitman for many years. Bill and Vivian enjoyed spending winters at their Winterhaven, Fla., home for over 20 years, spending summers in East Wareham. Bill held a special place in his heart for the plight of Native Americans. He especially enjoyed supporting the children at St. Joseph's Indian School in South Dakota. Services are being handled by Leighton-MacKinnon Funeral Home in Hanson. Visiting hours are omitted.
