Ellen G. Karsay Obituary
Ellen G. Karsay, 76, of Hampton, Virginia, passed away on March 29, 2017 at her home, after a brief bout with early onset dementia along with COPD. Ellen was born in Waltham, Mass. on May 25, 1940. She grew up in Watertown, Mass. She married William E. Karsay Jr. on May 27, 1961 and moved to Hampton, VA. in February of 1972. Ellen was a fiercely strong independent woman, a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, nana, and friend. Her own well-being was second to serving and caring for others. She never met a stranger and many a stray military men were invited to share a holiday meal at the Karsay table. Ellen had many jobs over the years which included working at Grover-Cronin department store, selling Avon, cooking at the Checkered Flag Tavern in Hampton, and most recently cleaning houses for over 20 years, to which she retired only after her health declined. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, reading, writing, singing karaoke, and hand-held video games. She acquired a second family at the Checkered Flag and formed many lasting friendships within the confines of those walls. She'll most notably be remembered for her ever present "snack bags" at family gatherings to share goodies with both young and old. Her love and devotion to her family, friends, and especially her grandchildren, were second to none. Her finest moments were taking care of her loving husband for 7 months prior to his passing in April of 2002. Ellen is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Ann MacDonald of Watertown, Mass. Her husband of 40 years, William E. Karsay Jr. of Hampton, VA. Ellen is survived by her daughters, Dorothy A. Karsay, of Newport News, VA., Debra Karsay Hall and husband, Scott W. Hall, of Yorktown, VA.; son, Robert J. Karsay of Hampton, VA.; sister, Elizabeth Ann MacDonald of Watertown, MA.; brother, Daniel J. MacDonald and wife, Sandra of Newton, MA.; grandchildren, Ryan C. Hall of Charlotte, NC. and Elizabeth Ann Hall of Yorktown, VA.; nephews, Wayne Walton and wife, Linda of Billerica,MA., Joseph and William MacDonald of Newton, MA.; along with many special great nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Samuel Jones, nurse Tabitha Nugent, and hospice care nurse, Lisa Laufer, for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the or to the March of Dimes, two charities that were near and dear to Ellens heart. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home.
