Mary (Maiz) Elizabeth Downing (d. March 22, 2012). Mary died as she lived, with tremendous grace, surrounded by family and friends, peacefully at home. She was 49. Born October 4, 1962 and raised in Watertown, MA, Mary studied theater arts at the University of Massachusetts and Hampshire College and theater directing at the California Institute of the Arts. She later taught at The Learning Community Charter School (LCCS) in Jersey City, New Jersey, and the Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies (BCS) in New York. Mary had a tremendous appreciation for life, and she filled it with kindness, laughter, and generosity. Ever curious, she was keenly interested in other's passions and saw potential in everyone, especially her students. Mary was the daughter of the late Walter and Diane Downing. She is survived by her loving, and much loved, husband Thomas Bossert, her brothers Walter and Michael Downing, sisters Catherine Downing and Elizabeth Bogusz, her in-laws Kelly Koniz-Downing, Peter Collins, Stephen Bogusz, and her nieces Katie, Molly, and Eva. Mary also leaves behind ardent friends, dedicated colleagues, inspirational students, and one very heart broken dog, Ginger. A viewing will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012, 2-5pm and 7-9pm at Provenzano Lanza Funeral Home, 43 Second Ave, NYC, NY.
