Nancy E. Sears Obituary
Nancy E. (Whiting) Sears, a resident of State Street, Portland, formerly of Cape Elizabeth, ME, and Wellesley, MA, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2018, at age 88. She was predeceased by her loving parents, Elbridge and Margaret Whiting. Nancy attended Cottage Farm School in Cape Elizabeth until grade two when her family moved to Augusta for war job reasons. She attended Augusta schools until her second year at Cony High School. The family moved back to the Portland area where Nancy graduated from Deering High School. In 1951, she graduated from the University of Maine. During her 36 years as an elementary school teacher, Nancy taught in Germany, Maine, California, and Washington, D.C., ending her career in Wellesley, MA. While teaching she acquired much experience, along with a love for travel, so when she retired from teaching, she attended Travel Agent School in Cambridge. She worked in the travel field for 12 years. While living in Wellesley, Nancy married and divorced Cushman Lathrop Sears. Later in life, back in Portland, she was involved in helping immigrants adjust to the U.S. at the Root Cellar in Portland. She greeted cruise ships arriving in Portland Harbor and served at soup kitchens. Nancy had a wonderful joy of life and rarely missed a sunny summer day to swim in the salt water. She loved to play bridge and tennis. She will be missed by all her friends and remembered by her favorite saying, Live well, laugh often and love much. Her friends would like to thank the staff of 75 State Street for providing Nancy with attentive, loving care for the past two years, as well as the VNA Hospice team for their great care in her final weeks. There will be a memorial gathering in May. If you would like to remember Nancy with a gift, please make a donation to: The Root Cellar, 94 Washington Avenue, Portland, ME 04101. Arrangements are under the guidance of Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland. Online condolences may be expressed at www.hobbs funeralhome.com.
