Robert (Rob) Mickle of Wellesley, an inspiring and familiar sideline presence as a youth sports coach and a trusted local businessman, died November 3, 2012 at the age of 54. He fought bravely and publicly a courageous battle against leukemia and succumbed to injuries related to his treatment. His humility and humanity, traits he exemplified both before and during his illness, were an inspiration to all. Rob's impact and legacy in Wellesley was grounded in two overarching principles he passed on to everyone he touched - love of family and friends, and a belief in the value of hard work both on the job and on the playing field. And indeed, there may be no more compelling memory than the sight of Rob on the soccer field or basketball court with a permanent smile on his face and a determination to prevail - or the sight of the satisfaction he took in watching his children and their friends play their hearts out in the games he loved. Rob's passion for sports was learned as a top player on his high school & college teams, and for the past 27 years as a fixture in the Over the Hill League; this was the same passion he passed on to the countless children he coached. As the owner/operator of Wellesley Party Rental and additional businesses on the North Shore, Rob sought not just to make a living - but to make a difference in the lives of his employees. He hired Wellesley teenagers, some who needed a helping hand, to augment his employee team. Over the past 25 years in business, Rob's perfectionism and business ethics created a large and loyal customer base. He not only taught professional skills, he taught life skills such as discipline and self-respect, and he led his employees by example with pride and self-determination. Born and raised on a horse farm in Pittsfield, MA to Gerald Mickle and the late Diane Masiero Mickle, Rob become an accomplished and competitive horseback rider, water skier, snowmobiler and motor cross rider in his youth. He was a graduate of Taconic High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree from Salem State College. The beloved husband of Alyssa (Rendino), he was also the loving father of Jacquelyn (Mickle) White and Robert Mickle, Jr. both of Andover, and Zachary Mickle of Wellesley. They were, and remain forevermore, the loves of his life. He is also survived by his son-in-law Jason White, sisters Lori Hickey of Dallas, TX and Doreen Newton of Pittsfield, as well as his niece and nephew Emilia and Gavin Zaentz of Newton. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17 at 1 pm in the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington St. Wellesley Hills. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rob's memory may be made to Leukemia Research Fund-DeAngelo, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave D1B30, Boston MA 02215, Attn Dr. Daniel DeAngelo. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Henry J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, Wellesley Hills. www.BurkeFamilyFuneralHomes.com
