Bertha McGray Obituary
Bertha "Bert" "Bea" Alice (Emmitt) McGray of Weymouth, died peacefully November 9, 2017, at the age of 97, at Seasons Hospice of Milton. Bertha was the wife of the late Ivan "Curly" M. McGray; and was the mother of Linda L. McGray and Sandra J, McGray-Barnett; and leaves many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers and sister, Rev. George (Jack) Emmitt, Hilda Fenton and John Charles Emmitt. She was born in Birmingham, England, and came to the states with her family, as a young child. She graduated from North Quincy High School, enjoyed playing basketball on the women's basketball team and would break out into a chant whenever any of North Quincy's teams won. During World War II, she volunteered on weekends as a candy striper at the local hospital. Her employment included Grossman's of Braintree, GEM's and All Stainless both in Hingham. She was originally a member of Quincy Point Congregational Church before becoming a member of Old South Union Congregational Church, Weymouth, where she was active in the M & M Club and their yearly craft fairs where she knitted and crocheted various items. Winter activities included sledding with her family and exchanged downhill skiing for the safer cross-country skiing. Summer vacations were spent at Sandy Island YMCA camp in New Hampshire and many years at a cottage on Onset Island, in Buzzard's Bay. A memorial service will be held on December 9, at 2 p.m. at the Old South Union Congregational Church, 25 Columbian St., in Weymouth. Bertha will join her husband Curly at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to the Norwell VNA, 120 Longwater Dr., Norwell, MA 02061. Arrangements are in the care of C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.), S. Weymouth. For online condolences or directions, please visit www.ccshepherd.com or call 781-337-0050.
