Ethel M. Martin Obituary
Ethel May (Gabriel) Martin, 90, of Weymouth formerly of Quincy died January 7, 2018. May, as she preferred to be called, was a child of the Great Depression and always appreciated the simple things in life; particularly her family and friends. She was born and raised in Quincy and graduated from Quincy High School and Burdett Business College. She spent much of her young adult life helping her older sister, Rose, with her two sons after Rose suffered the tragic loss of her husband in a military accident. In the summer of 1958, May married Austin Martin, and after a honeymoon cruise to Bermuda, took up residence in So. Weymouth. She worked at White Brothers Milk Company in Quincy during her 20s, and then spent many years as an Executive Secretary at Instron Corporation of Canton, retiring in the early 1990s around the time of her husbands passing. An active member of Christ Church Quincy, May enjoyed gardening, shopping, dining out, and working around her home. She also enjoyed hand crafts, sewing and knitting clothing for gifts, and in the summertime always had a Badminton Net set up in her back yard. She had a special love of Bermuda, and enjoyed taking many trips there over the years. Although she never had children herself, she enjoyed visits from her Nephews, Nieces, Great Nieces, and Great Nephews. In recent years, after suffering from some medical problems and memory loss, she lived at Sunrise Assisted Living in Braintree, where she had been very well cared for. May will be sadly missed by her friends and family. Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited, will be held at Hamel Funeral Care & Cremation Service of MA, 26 Adams St, Quincy Center on Friday, January 11, at 11:30 a.m. Visitation held prior to the start of the service from 10:00 | 11:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mays memory should be directed to Alzheimers Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
