Robert Gumpright Sr. Obituary
Robert Ernest Gumpright Sr., 94, passed away in his home on Thursday, August 3, 2017. A decorated veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, he was the beloved husband of more than 67 years to Ruth Barbara (Kantola) Gumpright. Born in 1923, he was raised in the Houghs Neck section of Quincy and was inducted into the Quincy High School Athlete's Hall of Fame in 2002 for his contributions in both baseball and football. A decorated U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, he retired in 1963 after more than 20 years of service. "Gumpy," as he was known, received the Air Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal (5), Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (5 Stars), and United Nations Service Medal (Korea) among other decorations. He returned to the South Shore of Boston following his retirement in 1962. He worked a short time at Boston Gear Works and ultimately fully retired as a letter carrier in the Wollaston Post Office in 1986. In addition to his beloved wife Ruth, he is survived by his four loving children, Robert Jr., Gary, Gayle (Baker), and Greg; and by his sisters, Barbara of Quincy, and Lorraine of Ventura, CA; and five grandchildren, Rob, Karl, Ashley, Daniel and Abigail. Interment with full military honors to take place Friday, August 18, at 11 a.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Bourne.
