Ruth E. (Rhodes) Johnson, 93, of Quincy and Marshfield, formerly of Hingham, died at home January 4, 2017, surrounded by the love, comfort and care of family. She was the devoted wife of 51 years to the late Robert C. Johnson. Born and raised in Hingham, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Elsie (Estabrook) Rhodes. Mrs. Johnson was active in Girl Scouts for more than 50 years, spending much of that time as a Girl Scout leader and cookie chairperson. She was a talented seamstress and also enjoyed knitting, jigsaw puzzles, summers in her cottage at Rexhame Beach and spending time with her family. In the 80s and 90s, she and her late husband traveled extensively as part of a square dancing group performing exhibitions and demonstrations around the country. Ruth will be remembered as a warm hearted, giving and selfless person who, for many years, knitted mittens and hats which she would donate to those in need through the Salvation Army in Quincy. She was the loving mother of Shirley J. OBrien and her husband Michael of Rockland and the late Melodee A. Connelly and her husband Thomas of Quincy. Cherished grandmother of Sean Connelly of Billerica, Beth Quinn of Rockland, Debbie Banville of Raynham and Brian OBrien of Rockland. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, many extended family members and friends, including her dear friend of 66 years, Ruth Nee of Falmouth. Funeral Monday, January 9, at 6 p.m. at the Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Funeral Home, 26 Adams St, Quincy Center. Visitation held prior to the start of the service, from 3-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 12 Baxter St, Quincy MA 02169.
